Sometimes there are areas of a project that can be very challenging adding conventional lights to such as a model of a narrow tunnel, hallway, or wet environment like an underwater project.
- Side Glow Fiber Optic is clear
- Side Glow transmits the light that you put into it. Use white light and the fiber will be white, use a green light it will be green, etc.
- Get 3mm or 5mm LEDs for a bright light source.
- Side Glow Fiber Optic does not show well in a bright room.
The optic strands are 1.5mm or 2.5mm in diameter and are very flexible. They light evenly along their length in the color of LED you choose to use.
Our fiber optic is sold by the foot. Price is 0.95 cents per foot. Add the number of Feet you need to cart. You will get a single piece of fiber optic of the length you select. We measure by the foot but we sell in whole pieces, so for example if you get 3 feet or 6 feet you will get a full sized piece it will not be cut.
This product can be easily cut to the exact sizes you need with regular scissors.
How do you use fiber optics? You will need an LED for a source light. Choose from any of the LEDs we carry. We like the 3mm or 5mm LEDs because they give a bright targeted light. We even like to put an LED at each end if the fiber will be used over a foot. If you want you can glue 2 or more fiber optic strands to the same LED.

I used this to add lighting to a pinball machine. It's much more compact than neon rope light and easily fits into tight spaces. Also I was able to achieve a much brighter glow by putting LED's at both ends of the cable using the black connectors. Hightly recommended.

Unfortunately - did not work as I had hoped. You have to align the ends Just Right, or you get little to nothing. And it's not as bright as I'd hoped. In fairness - this is my first time trying this - so I'm going to try again. Tips greatly appreciated.

Yes fiber optic will not be all that bright, it's never as bright as the LED powering it. It is more for indicator lights as you can see in the video on this page. What are you trying to light up with the fiber optic? Maybe we can help!

I've bought from Evan Designs for years for my costume builds and building block kits (LEGO, Mega Construx)! This was my first time using fiber optics and it was so easy, it really made my Halo Energy Sword kit glow just like in the games! I would definitely use them again for a future build.
